AGING + WRINKLES

aging skin 101

ACHIEVE A MORE YOUTHFUL‑LOOKING YOU

It's a part of life — our skin changes as we age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Facial aging actually begins in your 20s, when skin firmness begins to decrease as a result of both internal (genetics and natural aging) and external (sun exposure, smoking, stress, etc) factor.  As part of the natural aging process, volume in the hands can also deteriorate over time, making them appear aged.2

WHAT HAPPENS AS WE AGE?

  1. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps provide fullness and elasticity

  2. Hyaluronic acid diminishes as we age, causing skin to lose volume while increasing the chances for wrinkles and folds to appear

FROM TREATMENT

Treatment with a product from the dermal filler typically takes less than one hour (individual treatment times may vary). Generally, there is minimal downtime associated with treatment using the Restylane family of products.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP

combat the signs of aging with RESTYLANE®?

The good news is that you can do something about the signs of aging in the face and hands with products in the Restylane family — to help reveal a younger-looking you.

Products in the Restylane family are used to:

  • provide natural-looking results by smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds and adding volume to lips (Restylane)3

  • provide subtle lip enhancement and smoothing the lines around them (Restylane Silk)4

  • add fullness to the cheeks, midface area, and the back of the hands which can result in a more natural-looking, youthful appearance (Restylane Lyft)5

  • provide natural-looking results to laugh lines with flexibility that allows you to maintain your natural expressions (Restylane Refyne & Restylane Defyne)6,7

That means you get minimally invasive, clinically proven, natural-looking results to help achieve the look you want.

TREATMENT

do's and don'ts

BEFORE TREATMENT

  • Avoid using aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen), St. John's wort or high doses of vitamin E supplements. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

  • Talk with your healthcare professional if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores. He or she may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

AFTER TREATMENT

After treatment, use this helpful checklist:

  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.

  • Avoid exposure to intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing) or cold.

  • Reduce the risk of facial cold sore recurrence that could be caused by needle punctures. Talk with your healthcare professional about medications that may minimize the likelihood of an outbreak.

  • Avoid taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen), St. John's wort or high doses of vitamin E supplements.1-5 These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

  • If you’ve received a treatment in the back of your hands, avoid heavy or strenuous use of your hands immediately following treatment.2

  • After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache, tenderness, lump formation, itching at the injection site and impaired hand function. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14–18 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.

  • Remember to ask about follow-up appointments

Do not use if you have severe allergies with a history of severe reactions (anaphylaxis), are allergic to lidocaine or gram-positive bacterial proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, prone to bleeding, or have a bleeding disorder. The safety of use while pregnant or breastfeeding has not been studied. Tell your doctor if you have a history of scarring or pigmentation disorders as these side effects can occur with hyaluronic acid fillers. Tell your doctor if you are planning other cosmetic treatments (i.e., lasers and chemical peels) as there is a possible risk of inflammation at the injection site.

Tell your doctor if you’re taking medications that lower your body’s immune response or affect bleeding, such as aspirin or warfarin, as these medications may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding at the gel injection site. Using these products on gel injection sites with skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infections should be postponed until healing is complete.

The most common side effects are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache, tenderness, lump formation, itching at the injection site, and impaired hand function. Serious but rare side effects include delayed onset infections, recurrence of herpetic eruptions, and superficial necrosis at the injection site. The risk of unintentional injection into a blood vessel is small but can occur and could result in serious complications, which may be permanent including, vision abnormalities, blindness, stroke, temporary scabs, or permanent scarring of the skin. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
